I received alot of emails wanting to know how to do some funky polka dots so I figured I better write it up before the natives get restless. I also will throw in a quick way to get nice even dotted lines in your designs. These techniques use channels (of course) along with some basic filters and paths. Enjoy.

For the polka dots, create a new channel and make the rough shape you want in white. I used a simple oval shape.

Use filter | blur | gaussian blur, the amount will determine how far out the dots go. I used a setting of 10.

Go to filter | pixelate | color halftone. The first input box determines the size of your dots, I used 5 because my graphic is small. The other boxes determine the angle, I usually leave these alone. This is the result.

Thats it, just go to the layers palette, create a new layer and load your channel (ctrl+alt+4). Then use alt+backspace to fill it with the color of your choice. Its that simple.

Now on to dotted lines. Create a new channel and use the pen tool to create a path for your dots. If you hold shift while using the pen it will constrain it to straight lines. |

In the brush pallete double click on the brush size of your choice. Adjust the spacing to around 200 - 250%. I used 200%.

With proper brush selected, choose the pen tool and right click on the image. Select stroke subpath, and choose paintbrush. Right click again and choose delete path to get rid of the path.

Now you can go to the layers palette, load the selection (ctrl+alt+4) and either fill with your color or gradient, or stroke the selection for a different effect. Voila, perfectly spaced dotted lines. |
